The wholesale trade report provides the dollar amount of wholesale inventories and sales. Also calculated is the inventory-to-sales ratio.
| Meaning:
Wholesale trade data reflects activity at the wholesale level and may provide insight into consumer trends. The level of inventories is analyzed as an indicator of economic activity. High inventory levels may mean slower production in order to reduce existing inventories and low inventory levels may mean a step up in production so product shortages do not occur. The inventory-to-sales ratio helps to balance sales growth and inventory growth.
