Definition: The amount in dollars of consumer credit outstanding. Consumer credit outstanding is defined as credit not secured by real estate. Consumer credit is tracked through three main categories of credit: Auto Loans, Revolving Credit and Other Loans. Growth in consumer credit outstanding is stated as an annualized rate.
Meaning: The consumer credit indicator is used to predict consumer-spending trends. Acceleration or slowing of credit growth portends of rising or falling consumer demand. Consumer credit data is considered dated material and has little impact on interest rates.
